MW3 Killed My PS3?

Ya, no. But we hear this every time a popular new title is released. In November it was MW3 and Battlefield3 that had our phones ringing.

Yes, these new titles push the envelope of PS3 GPU power and might have been at the helm when the YLOD struck. The problem, however, still stems from the owner’s failure to clean their heat sink after the first 3 years (since purchase, regardless of game play time).

Take an hour or so to clean your heat sink (if you’re out of warranty and don’t care about ever sending the unit to Sony for repair) and hopefully you can avoid the dreaded yellow light.

Arctic Silver 5 : Official Application Method

We see much debate out there re: the proper application method of Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound on PS3 Cell and RSX processors. So last week we called Arctic Silver Inc again for the 2011 party line on it.

They confirmed that spreading is not optimal, because of the tendency to create air bubbles.

The AS tech said to use “a centrally-placed bead about the size of the white area at the base of your pinky fingernail.” How’s that for specific?

AS also suggested doing 2 or 3 trial runs to be sure you’re getting a nickel-sized contact area. The good thing about using less compound here is that it’s far easier to pull the heat sink off if it’s not slathered in AS.

What is your preferred technique? Comment below.

Eject Disc (manually) from a Slim PS3

Ok it’s official, we’re going for 100 videos by New Years Day 2012. Or maybe 2013.  Anyway your 100,000 YouTube views has inspired us to make 2011 the year of the FMP video.

First up… it’s more of a secret than you gamers would admit: the Slim PS3 Manual Eject feature.  If your Slim has died because of a lightning strike or yellow light of death (yes, they’re already frying after 18 months so clean your %#$@ heat sink like we told you) and you have a disc stuck inside, watch this shockingly short video for the secret of manual ejection.

I told you it was short.

Why was your disc stuck inside?  Tell us in a comment.

50 Million PS3 Units Sold

A little more than 4 years after launching the Playstation 3 console, Sony recently announced that 50,000,000 units have been sold. This practically ties them with Microsoft, who had a 1 year head start with their XBox 360 console.

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2011/04/sony-hits-50-million-mark-with-ps3-8-million-with-playstation-move/1

Although good news for Sony, such solid PS3 sales are another sign that the PS4 won’t be appearing any time in the near future. In fact, Sony reps were recently noted to have said that all factors add up to a healthy 10-year lifecycle for the PS3… which only gives hope for a 2018 PS4 launch at best.

When do you think the PS4 will launch?

How To Replace A PS3 400A Laser

The 2nd most common repair in the PS3 world is laser replacement.  Around the 3 1/2 year mark, 400A and 410 BluRay lasers lose either their BluRay reading capacity.  50% can still read DVD movies (or PS2 games if the system is a CECHA01, B01 or E01 model)… which is cool, because you know for sure that the laser is the problem.  The other 50% can’t read any disc, so cleaning or replacement are the only troubleshooting options.

Check out our step-by-step how to repair a PS3 laser video:

FORMAT THE HARD DRIVE?  NO!
Will formatting your hard drive fix your dead laser?  In a word… no. It’s a bit of an internet myth that formatting the hard drive automatically fixes a dead laser.  But there is a but of truth to it.  In about 2% of “disc read error” units that we receive the problem is that there is some corrupt data on the hard drive, which stops communication between the motherboard and disc drive.  In those situations alone, doing a quick format on the hard drive removes the bad data and the laser springs to life again.

CLEAN BEFORE REPLACING
BluRay lasers are very sensitive to dust and cigarette smoke. If there are smokers in the house, be sure to simply clean the laser lens(es) with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol before actually replacing the laser. The ONLY lasers we’ve been able to fix by cleaning came from homes with heavy smokers.

DO A DRY RUN OR 2 FIRST
Before you buy a $70 replacement laser, first watch our video and do at least 2 dry runs. Remove and replace your own laser 2x. Then you’ll be sure you can safely replace it.

Have you replaced your own PS3 laser? Tell us about it in a comment below!

Commodore 64 Redux: When Zombies Attack!

Christmas 1982 was quite an event at my house.  There were just 2 presents that ruled the day.  The first was a 1531 Datasette tape drive (it would be an entire year before we were freed from our tape-bound toil and drudgery by the 1541 5.25″ disk drive), which proudly heralded the contents of the second – The Grand And Glorious Commodore 64 8-bit Home Computer.  The rest was a blur.

Commodore 64 PC

The following 4 years of high school were peppered with indelible memories of late night Lode Runner marathons and 4-man Jumpman competitions.  Piracy was rife back then, and it was a common sight to see the weekend’s haul of new games traded like baseball cards in the cafeteria at noon Monday.  I knew one guy who sold his C64 in 1992 with over 350 copied games.  Ah, good times they were.

It was those times that laid the foundation for my future in console repair.

Now the progenitor returns, now in the form of the C64x pc-compatible with options including Dual Core Atom processor, 2GB DDR3 memory, 160GB-1TB HDD, Blue Tooth, WIFI, BluRay drive and 1080p video output.  Check the spec page for details:

Yea it’s pricey, particularly if you want BluRay, but for a niche box like this you have to expect to shell out.

Brownie points and kudos galore to the first FMP fan who sends a photo, or moving pictures of their C64x being opened!

Was Your PS3 Saved by Firmware v3.60?

We were hammered with phonecalls from PS3 owners (Slims in particuluar) that locked up after updating to firmware 3.56.

Word in the business was that 3.57 (or 3.60 as we soon learned would be released) was the only possible fix.

The phonecalls have dried up, so we assume this was the fix we were waiting for.

Has your frozen PS3 been saved by 3.60?

What problems were you having under 3.57?

PS2 Web Browser?

This Sunday morning started with a customer calling for information about a web browser for his PS2.  My first thought was, “why hasn’t anyone asked about this before?”

After 20 minutes of Googling, I’m not finding a definitive answer.

So… I’ll leave it to my fellow FMPers.

  1. Which PS2 web browser do/did you use?
  2. Is it available for download and CD-R burning?
  3. Is it commercially available?
